Perennial Pea

Perennial Pea (Lathyrus latifolius) is a robust, long-lived climbing vine from southern Europe, valued for its showy clusters of pink, white, or magenta sweet-pea-like flowers that bloom prolifically from early summer to early fall. Though individual flowers lack the fragrance of annual sweet peas, this tough, drought-tolerant perennial provides reliable color on fences, trellises, and slopes with minimal care.

Stems: Winged, angular, hairless to slightly pubescent, pale green to bluish-green, reaching 1.8–3 m in length. The stem wings (flattened extensions along the angles) are a distinctive feature.
Leaves: Pinnately compound with a single pair of broadly ovate to elliptic leaflets, 4–10 cm long and 2–5 cm wide, gray-green to medium green. Each leaf terminates in a branched tendil used for climbing. Stipules are large and arrowhead-shaped, 2–5 cm long.
Flowers: Produced in axillary racemes of 3–10 flowers on long, stiff peduncles. Individual flowers are papilionaceous (pea-like), 2–2.5 cm long, in shades of pink, rose, magenta, or white, sometimes bicolored. The standard petal is broad and slightly notched at the tip. Flowers are showy but unscented or very faintly scented.
Fruit: Flattened, hairless legume pods 5–8 cm long, turning from green to tan-brown as they mature, containing 5–10 smooth, dark brown, rounded seeds. Pods split explosively when dry, flinging seeds several meters.
Roots: Forms a deep, fleshy, rhizomatous root system that allows the plant to persist for decades and makes it difficult to eradicate once established.

Planting: Sow seeds directly in fall or early spring, or plant container-grown specimens in spring. Scarify seeds or soak in warm water for 12 hours before sowing to improve germination. Space plants 30–45 cm apart.
Support: Provide a trellis, fence, netting, or pea sticks for the tendrils to climb. Will also scramble through shrubs.
Watering: Water during establishment. Once established, supplemental watering is rarely needed — this plant thrives on neglect.
Maintenance: Cut stems back to ground level in late autumn or early spring. No staking, feeding, or special care required.
Propagation: By seed (self-seeds freely), division of established clumps in early spring, or softwood cuttings in summer.
Hardiness: USDA Zones 3–9. Fully hardy across most temperate climates.

Despite its common name, Perennial Pea produces absolutely no fragrance — unlike its famous cousin the annual sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus), which was bred for its intoxicating scent. Gardeners have been trying to create a fragrant perennial sweet pea for centuries, but the characteristic stubbornly refuses to cross between the two species. The plant's explosive seed pods can fling seeds up to 6 meters, making it one of the more enthusiastic self-seeders in the garden.
