The Leichhardt Tree (Nauclea orientalis) is a medium-sized to large evergreen tree of the coffee family (Rubiaceae), widely distributed across tropical northern Australia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. Named after the famous German-Australian explorer Ludwig Leichhardt, this handsome tree is distinguished by its glossy dark foliage, fragrant creamy-yellow flower heads, and distinctive globular, lumpy fruits. It is a common and ecologically important species along riverbanks and in seasonal wetlands across northern Australia, where it provides shade, habitat, and erosion control.
